Much research has been done on the craniosacral system within the body. It is a form of alternative medicine used to assess and enhance the functioning of the client by accessing their primary respiratory mechanism. Measurements of the craniosacral motion are a function of the cardiovascular system, and by working the body from the skull to the tail-bone or sacrum, the therapist can remove restrictions in the flow of cerebrospinal fluid, release pain, stress, anxiety, headaches, and enhance overall health. The system moves rhythmically throughout our lives.

The craniosacral system is made up of a three layered membrane system called the meninges; the cerebrospinal fluid which is enclosed by this membrane system; and the structures within the membrane system that controls fluid input and outflow. This system encloses the brain, the spinal cord as well as the pituitary and pineal glands and has a powerful effect upon the function of the endocrine system and the hormones that it secretes. This system connects the sacrum and pelvis to the neck and the head via the tube of dura matter membrane that runs through the spinal cord. Tension in the sacrum can easily effect the head and the neck. CST work improves the function of the nervous and endocrine systems by improving the environment in which these systems do their work. CST improves the drainage of oxygen-poor blood from the veins and improves the supply of oxygen-rich blood to the arteries of the brain.

The client is usually fully dressed. By lightly placing their hands on the client, therapists attempt to tune into the body's rhythm and energy system to focus on the source of abnormal energy patterns. Gentle traction of the legs is used to see if there is resistance in the tissues or if they lack symmetry. CST encourages the body to naturally correct itself. The very gentle pressure used in this form of therapy is what separates CST from all other forms of therapy.
